What We Did Over Spring Break

Had the best picnic EVER at a beautiful park.Note Grandma's sincere picnic basket.

Bonded with a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Madrone.

Practiced new skills with old friends.
Stayed in a sweet mountain lodge for three nights with two other great families.
Played in Oregon's mountain snow and a hot tub.

Enjoyed just being a kid!

Let a joy keep you. Reach out your hands and take it when it runs by.

Good Times That Deserve Documentation

When was the last time you went to the Newport Aquarium?

For us, it was in January. Seems like just yesterday. Good times.
Anyone want to guess where these pictures were taken during another of our January getaways? Clue: totally different location on the Oregon coast.

Yurts Don't Hurt

We have stayed in Yurts three times already in 2010. First we stayed in one at Fort Stevens, then at Beverly Beach, and then the girls had a Daddy Daughter getaway to one at Cape Lookout. Yurts are a great way to "camp out" in the cold season. They are heated, relatively inexpensive, and cozy. It helps if they are near interesting places, like the beach or the woods. If it's pouring down rain the sound of the rain on the roof is cool.

The Collages

Finally, finally I put the finishing touches on this tree collage for our mantle, which I showed herein a more primitive form. It took me awhile to add to it piece by piece and then declare it done. It's funny how that works, you just know when you're done, and this one is. I love the look of a wooden background. This one was made on a sheet of thin birch from Michaels.

I am working on another collage for Avery's room with birds. Stay tuned......

I made this one for Julia's room last December.

More and more it seems that collages are my favorite artistic medium and that when I finish one, I want to start another.

Rail on, Long Beach! Rail on!

I need to add a new term to the Urban Dictionary, a word we used often in college: Railer. We used it to describe people who RAILED. If you RAIL, you wear cut-off jeans and a mullet when it's unfashionable. RAILERS roller skate around town listening to walkmans. To RAIL meant do your thing with wild abandon when nobody else was doing it. The term comes up now and then between my husband and I, and was used quite often during our last trip to the shore.

We went to Long Beach, Washington over President's Weekend. Long Beach rails, let me tell you. To prove my point, when we drove up, there was caution crime scene tape wrapped around a whole block, enough to detour traffic. My husband learned when checking into the motel room that there had been a shooting the night before but that they'd caught the criminal. The next day his trip to the grocery store revealed otherwise, they had not caught the criminal. Perhaps he was swimming in the pool at our motel, murky and glowing all at once. That trip to the pool? A true adventure in railing.

We tried to hike out to Ledbetter State Park but the trail was flooded. Rail on, trail! It was still very pleasant=no mosquitos. The first day we were there the wind might have knocked down Avery, so we didn't venture down until it had calmed a bit. Rail on, wind! The next day, the beach just couldn't help but be amazing. The weather defied the gloomy forecast. It railed! And honestly, what's more railer than being able to drive on the beach?

We had fun creating a Sea Gal, who definitely knew how to rail.

Rail on, Long Beach, Rail on! Perhaps this could be a lyric sung to the tune of, "Roll on Colombia, Roll on!"

Keeping it Real Monday Returns!

The playroom, after a weekend of heavy action, sits waiting to be cleaned. I've already alerted the girls that we're tackling it after school today, but for now, it wants you to notice how messy it is. Just keepin' it real, yo!
